Thailand – Foreign cultures and traditions
Thailand is undoubtedly one of the richest countries in the world, both because of its variety of fruits and because of its deeply rooted traditions and hoarded knowledge. Once you have visited Thailand, you will immediately see the close connection between advanced technology and the beliefs rooted in the hearts of the people. This is particularly evident in Bangkok, where there is a vast skyline right next to magnificent temples such as Wat Phra Kaew, the capital’s Buddhist royal palace. Outside the capital and the tourist conurbations Thailand offers a far more natural picture. The landscape is characterised by densely overgrown primeval forests and flooded rice fields. As an emerging industrial nation, however, this idyll threatens to disappear. Western culture and modern cultivation methods are expanding their influence in Southeast Asia. Orkos and its producers try to communicate the importance of sustainable agriculture.
Sustainable agriculture in Thailand
The farmers who send us their products are more than just suppliers. Over time, we have come to know and appreciate them, because both sides share the same values of respect for the land and its traditions. Sensitised to environmental issues and the damage caused by destructive Western farming methods, they are well aware of the challenges and the need for traditional, sustainable agriculture. With intelligence and ingenuity, they manage to combine the traditional cultivation of their ancestors with modern, sustainable methods. They reject the use of chemicals, maintain soil health and, in most cases, run permaculture to provide natural protection for plants against pests. Our farmers are resistance fighters and the silent builders of tomorrow’s agriculture, who make it traditional and natural. They can only be talked about with recognition and respect, because their know-how and their work produce an incredible quality. It is a pleasure for us to be able to offer you such a large selection of Thai exotics with the help of our producers.
